Florian Mahrl · As of 6 November 2026
I’m Florian, a dad from Vienna. Many visitors come to Salzburg because of this film. I wanted to know whether you can see the locations on a winter day without a bus tour.
You can. We built the day from the operators’ websites and the timetables, not on site with a stopwatch. If something is wrong, please write to me.
The day
Possible every day. The cathedral only opens at 1 pm on Sundays.
Winter plan: the boat and the Schafberg railway only run in Advent and over the holidays; the trail in Werfen is closed in winter.
Start: Start at Mirabell Gardens.
Marked with ✦: a film location of ‘The Sound of Music’ (1965).
Right next to it, the cathedral (Monday to Saturday from 9 am, Sundays from 1 pm): Mozart was baptised here the day after he was born; the font is still there.
Children up to 13 free. Children's audio guide tour (15 minutes).

The pavilion from the film stands in the palace park at Hellbrunn. The park is open all year, daily 6:30 am–9 pm, free; the palace and trick fountains are closed in winter.
In Advent (20 Nov–20 Dec, Wednesday to Sunday, plus 7 and 8 Dec) and from 26 Dec to 3 Jan: bus 150 via Fuschl to St. Gilgen, by boat to St. Wolfgang and up the Schafberg railway to the Schafbergalm. Not to the summit in winter.
Werfen: trail to the meadow of the picnic scene, about an hour; train from Salzburg 46 minutes. Closed in winter because of ice.
For music lovers: Mozart's Birthplace and the Mozart Residence, daily 9 am–5:30 pm, children under 6 free.
In Advent: on to Lake Wolfgang
From 20 November to 20 December boats run between St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang, and there are markets by the lake. We put that whole day on its own page.
No guarantee. We read the times, prices and timetables on the operators’ websites and in the timetables on 6 November 2026. Please check before you go.
